CARSON -- In search of a weekend split after dropping both ends of yesterday's double-header, the Cal State Dominguez were unable to hold visiting Cal State East Bay from taking game four by a score of 12-6.

The Toros take control of the bottom spot once again in the standings with an overall record of 10-22 and a California Collegiate Athletic Association record of 6-18.  Cal State East Bay improves to 14-20 overall, 7-16 in conference play.

Matt Akiyama led the Toros in their offensive efforts hitting 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI on the afternoon.

Jonathan Boersma made his third start of the season for the Toros, pitching just 4.1 innings of work before being knocked out of the game by the hot Pioneer bats.

Boersma was dominating on the mound through the first four innings, only allowing three hits.

The Toros staked Boersma to an early four spot in the bottom of the second inning.  Chris Vopinek led off the Toro scoring with an infield single to shortstop.  After Akiyama sacrificed him to second, left fielder Danny Haley stepped up with a clutch two-out hit that bounced off of the second base bag and into the outfield to score the first run of the game.

Catcher Brian Gregory took second on four balls and with Haley on second after to a stolen base, leadoff hitter Matthew Young extended the lead on an RBI single to right center.  Carlos Avila then took advantage of a missed play by the Pioneers starting shortstop Ed Rettagliata, reaching first safely and allowing Gregory to score an unearned run.

All with two outs in the second, Drew Rodela stepped up and singled in the final run of the inning.

The top of the fifth brought some issues for Boersma after CSUEB scored six runs on five hits, knocking him from the game in favor of reliever Benny Vo, who entered with the bases full and allowed a pair of runs to cross the plate.

The Pioneer lead was short-lived, however, as Akiyama brought home Sako Chapjian with an RBI double, and scored himself on an RBI base-knock by Devon Ramirez.

Ramirez then tried his luck on the mound, but East Bay tagged him for five earned runs over the next three innings to take an 11-6 lead.

True freshman Spencer Maxey then took the mound for the Toros, allowing one more run for the final tally.

Although CSUEB starter Brandyn Bell started out rough, he settled in and held the Toros to just four earned runs in the win.  Michael Chavez earned the save of the season after entering the game with just a one run lead over the Toros, and holding CSUDH to their six runs.

Joining Akiyama with two hits was Drew Rodela, while five Toros in Young, Carlos Avila, Haley, Ramirez, and Vopinek all secured a hit on the day.

The Toros will continue their conference play next weekend when they will face off in a three-day, four-game series against UC San Diego.  After two single games in La Jolla, the Tritons visit Toro Field on Saturday, April 14, for a twinbill, with first pitch set for 12 noon.
