Pioneers Roll a Pair of Eights in 8-3 and 8-7 Sweep Over Toros

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CARSON -- Junior Matthew Young belted a first-inning home run to kick off the scoring, but Pioneer starter Ben O'Bryan went 7.0 strong innings to lead a come-from-behind 8-3 win over the Toros in game one of today's twinbill, before the visitors withstood a furious Toro rally in holding on for an 8-7 nightcap win.

With the losses, the Toros drop back into the CCAA cellar with a 10-21, 6-17 CCAA record, while the Pioneers improve to 13-20, 7-16 CCAA.

After Young began the bottom of the first with his blast in the opener, Pioneer starter Ben O'Bryan settled in, shutting down the Toros over the next six innings while his offense rallied for all eight unanswered runs from the second through sixth frames, with 4 hits accounting for 3 runs in the second and 3 hits and a pair of Toros plating 3 runs in the fifth.

The Toro bats scrapped together a run in the 7th after three of the first four batters walked off O'Bryan, who finished with 128 pitches in the game, before a Drew Rodela sacrifice fly brought home CSUDH's second run of the game.

The Toros added another in the ninth off reliever Zachary Wong, but it was too little too late in the loss.

Along with Young, Carlos Avila, Matt Akiyama and Devon Ramirez tallied two hits in the game, with starter Nick Plantz lasting just 4.2 innings en route to the loss.

The Toros got off the a great start in the nightcap, tagging Pioneer ace AJ Gallardo for three runs in the first four frames after a Rodela RBI double in the first, a Chris Vopinek RBI single in the third and a Sako Chapjian sacrifice fly in the fourth.

CSUEB, however, would take the lead for good in the fifth on four hits, scoring four runs on three RBI singles and a Toro error.

The Pioneers chased Torres in their next at-bat, again scoring four runs on four hits, the big blow coming on a bases-clearing 3RBI double by Jordan Wilder to seemingly break the game open.

The Toros, however, showed their resiliency as they answered with four of their own in their sixth inning at-bat, with Akiyama delivering the key 2RBI single in the frame that chased Gallardo.

Riding that offensive high, CSUDH looked to tie the game in the seventh after Young roped a two-out single to right and stole second, but Pioneer reliever Wong induced a fly out to right field for the final out to earn the save.

Young and Akiyama led the offense with two hits apiece in the loss, with Carlos Avila scoring twice.

The two teams will conclude their four-game set tomorrow morning at 11 am, with all the action being called on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
