Toros Held to Just One Run in Series Finale Loss at Chico State

Box Score

CHICO--The Cal State Dominguez Hills Baseball team returned home without a win after dropping the series finale 8-1 at Chico State in Sunday's California Collegiate Athletic Association contest.

The Toros are now 12-32 overall and 8-28 in the CCAA, while Chico State improves 33-13 overall, 25-13 in conference play.

Sunday marked the first of the four-game series that the Toros were not first on the board, with the Wildcats scoring two runs as early as the first inning.

In the fourth inning senior Devon Ramirez started off a Toro rally with a lead off double to left field.  With a deep fly ball to center by Chris Allen, Ramirez was able to take third and then score on a sacrifice fly hit by Drew Rodela

Jonathan Boersma started the series finale for the Toros and held the Wildcats to just a one run lead, until the bottom of the third inning when Chico State's offense exploded for five more runs.

After 5.2 innings of work, Boersma was retired after offering the Wildcats their final run of the game, while Chico continued to hold off the Toros from crossing the plate again throughout the contest.

The senior starter for the Toros left the game with six earned runs on nine hits, walking three batters, and fanning two.  Hector Gomez was the only one of the Dominguez Hills staff to come in for relief, pitching 2.1 innings of work and allowing just two hits in the process.

Ramirez led the Toro offensive effort, hitting 2-for-2 with a run scored, including connecting for a double.  Chris Allen finished 2-for-3, while Drew Rodela was 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI, and a walk on the afternoon.

The Toros will return home for their final weekend of play, where they will host the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes for the first two games of the series and wrap up the series on the road at CSUSB.

Series will begin Thursday with a first pitch time of 3 p.m.
