Toros Swept by Offensive Otters in 13-5 and 10-1 Decisions

Box Score
SEASIDE -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team was unable to take last night's feel-good victory into today's double-header as CS Monterey Bay took 13-5 and 10-1 wins over the Toros.  Drew Rodela led CSUDH offensively in the sweep.

The Toros fall to 8-21 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 12-25 overall.  CS Monterey Bay improves its conference record to 16-18 and overall record to 23-21.

Nick Plantz started game one of the doubleheader against the Otters, but was knocked from the game after allowing five runs with one earned after defensive miscues in just two-thirds of an inning.

With the Toros down five runs in one inning of play, they looked to reliever Brandon Quezada to hold off the hot bats of the Otters.  Quezada held his opponents to no additional runs until the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Toros were not able to gain any ground on Monterey's starter, who only allowed four hits through five innings.

In the bottom of the fourth the Otters extended their lead by three more runs, followed by two runs in the sixth to bring their lead to 10 runs over the visiting Toros.

It was not until the sixth inning that Cal State Dominguez Hills was able to score its first run after Matthew Young connected for his fifth homerun of the year.

After three consecutive singles by Chris Voipinek, Danny Haley, and Brian Gregory, the Toros were on the board with three more runs in the seventh inning.  Matthew Young stepped up once again with an RBI sacrifice fly ball to score Haley from third.

With two down, Carlos Avila reached first on a throwing error by the catcher, resulting in another Toro run, scored by Gregory.

The Toros could not seem to catch a break after the Otters answered back with their final three runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Although Drew Rodela hit his second homerun of the season, the Toros were unable to come back from such a large Otter lead, inevitably dropping game one, 13-5.

Rodela finished at the top of the Toro offense hitting 3-for-4 on the day with a run and an RBI.  Young finished 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, while Gregory was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

The nightcap between the two clubs showed little difference from the the opener with the Toros only netting in one run in the seven-inning game.

Cal State Monterey Bay took a considerable lead in the first inning once again with four runs offered up by the game two starter, Danny Torres.  The bats continued strong through the second inning as well, with the Otters taking a 7-0 lead after just two innings of play.

CSUDH's fortune was not quite as lucky, unable to gain a single hit until the fourth inning.

After 1.1 innings of work, Torres was knocked from the game in favor of senior reliever Devon Ramirez, who pitched the next four innings for the Toros.  Over the next three innings of work, Monterey Bay was able to cross home plate with three more runs bringing their final total to 10 runs.

The Toros were able to gain a run on the home team in the sixth, where Matthew Young led off with a walk, followed by a stolen base.  Young then advanced to third on a ground-out and scored the only Toro run on a sacrifice fly by Sako Chapjian

Rodela was the only member of the Dominguez Hills line-up that connected for a hit in the nightcap.

The two teams conclude the four-game set tomorrow morning at 11 am.
