Torres Masterpiece Salvages Split Against CCAA Leader UC San Diego

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CARSON -- Senior Danny Torres turned in arguably the best performance of his Toro career in today's nightcap, keeping California Collegiate Athletic Association leader UC San Diego off the board in a 1-0 nightcap win after the visitors ran away with a 14-2 decision in the opening game this afternoon on Toro Field.

Both teams remain at opposites of the CCAA leaderboard with the Toros holding the bottom of the standings with a league record of 7-20 and 11-24 overall.  Even with the loss, the Tritons remain the conference leaders at 21-10 CCAA, 23-16 overall.

After suffering the lopsided loss in the opener, the senior leadership of Torres is just what the Toros needed in the nightcap.  The Torrance native pitched his first complete game of the season, shutting out UCSD while scattering just five hits while mixing his pitches throughout the 7.0 innings of work, and hitting the spots all afternoon.

Much like game one of the doubleheader, the Toros scored first, with one run in the first inning which proved to be just enough for the win.

In the inning, Matthew Young started the game with a double, and avoided an attempted pick off play by beating the Triton third baseman to the third base bag, ahead of the second baseman's throw.

That 21st stolen base of the year proved huge as Young scored on a sacrifice fly by Sako Chapjian for the game's first and only run.

Torres was masterful in tossing just 65 pitches in the game, with 48 coming for strikes.  He faced just four batters above the minimum required in a 7-inning game, fanning three without a walk.

Picking up from the four-error game in the opener, the Toros defense was strong for Torres with no errors in the nightcap.

Game one started out right for the Toros after scoring in the bottom of the first on a Drew Rodela RBI double, staking starter Nick Plantz to an early lead through three complete, until a Triton run in the fourth knotted the game at 1-1.

In the next two innings, however, things fell apart for the Toros as UCSD plated four for a 5-1 lead, before adding five more in the next inning for a commanding 10-2 lead.

After the CSUDH middle relief corps failed to hold the high-powered UCSD offense at bay, Cody Yates took the mound in hopes of having a little more success in shutting down a strong Triton offense.

And Yates did just that, pitching 3.1 innings with just two earned runs against, adding four Ks in his outing.

UCSD reliever Jeff Rauh gained his third win of the season after entering in the fourth and pitching 3.0 innings with just one earned run on three hits, striking out three Toro batters.

Offensively leading the Toros on the day was Drew Rodela, swinging 5-for-7 with two rbi's and two doubles.  Danny Haley, who started in left in the opener, was 2-for-3 on the day with a run scored.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team will wrap up its series with UC San Diego tomorrow evening to make up a postponed game, with first pitch set for 6 pm in La Jolla.
