Errors Cost Toros in 3-1 Loss at CCAA-Leading UC San Diego

Box Score

LA JOLLA -- Junior Sean Wardour was stellar on the mound for eight innings, but defensive errors by the Toros proved costly in a Thursday night California Collegiate Athletic Association 3-1 loss at league-leading UC San Diego.

Both teams remain on their opposite ends of the standings as the Toros remain at the bottom with an overall record of 10-23 and 6-19 in the CCAA.  The Tritons remain at the top of the leaderboard after improving to 22-15, 20-9 in conference play.

Pitchers for both teams pitched solid games, with the Triton starter lasting six innings offering just one earned run on five hits.  Wardour lasted much longer than his opponent as eight innings of work also produced just one earned run on eight Triton hits.

Although the pitchers' duel seem to last throughout most of the game, Wardour found himself in some trouble after a CSUDH error put the Tritons up 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

The Toros answered back with a run in the fourth after Sako Chapjian connected on one of the only two multiple base hits on the night.  Drew Rodela then stepped up with a single to centerfield, scoring Chapjian and bringing the Toros to just a two-run deficit.

In the sixth and the ninth the Toros had runners in scoring postion, with Avila hitting a triple in the sixth and Rodela connecting for his second hit of the game in the ninth, but inevitably the Tritons relief pitching and flawless defense held the Toros from crossing the plate once more through out the contest.

Offensively leading the Toros in their efforts was Rodela hitting 2-for-4 on the night with the team's only RBI.  Chapjian scored the only run after swinging 1-for-3.

The Toros will face the Tritons tomorrow night, under the lights once again, with first pitch set for 6 p.m.
