Toros Take Game Two Against Cal Poly Pomona in 9-8 Win

Box Score

CARSON -- Senior starter Nick Plantz threw a solid 8.1 innings of work to help secure a game two win over Cal Poly Pomona Friday afternoon in a California Collegiate Athletic Assoiation contest as the Toros held on for a 9-8 win.

The Toros gain their third CCAA win to bring their conference record to 3-11 and their overall record to 5-13.  The Broncos are now 14-7 overall, 7-7 in conference play.

Much like the series opener on Thursday the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos put up four runs up early, while the Toros did not earn their first hit until the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth Chris Allen started off by reaching on an error by the right fielder that advanced him to second.  With two outs, Ellis Whitman then came up clutch by hitting a double to right field to switch places with Allen.  Brian Oda, who came in to pinch hit, kept the two-out rally going after connecting for a single through the left side to score Whitman.

The Broncos gained another run and put more pressure on CSUDH in bringing their lead back up to 5-2, until Sako Chapjian cut his squad's deficit to just won after launching a two-run homer to left-center field, scoring Ricky Vasquez, who singled ahead of him.

With four runs scored on four hits, CSUDH was able to take an 8-5 lead over the Broncos, allowing Plantz to pitch with the lead for the first time in the contest.  In the bottom of the eighth the Toros scored their final run of the game to make the score 9-5 before attempting at their final three outs of the game.

Oda, who was stationed in left field, was brought in for relief of Plantz in the ninth inning, and was given a rude welcome after offering up a three-run homerun to bring the score within one run once again, with another batter reaching base.

Matt Akiyama, however, saved the game after diving to start 4-6-3 double play to end the game, securing the 9-8 win.

Plantz wrapped up the day with six earned runs in 8.1 innings of work, while only walking three batters and fanning seven.

Chapjian led the team hitting 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs, while Oda went 2-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI, and a double on the day.

The Cal State Dominguez HIlls baseball team will wrap up their final two games of the series Saturday on the road at Cal Poly Pomona.  The doubleheader will begin at 11 a.m.
