Broncos Hang On for 10-9 Win Over Toros to Open CCAA Series

Box Score
CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills nearly completed an improbable comeback after scoring nine unanswered runs, but Cal Poly Pomona's 10 runs were enough in the Broncos' 10-9 win to open the four-game league series.  Devon Ramirez enjoyed a 4-for-5 effort at the plate to lead the Toro offense.

WIth the loss, CSUDH falls to 4-13, 2-11 CCAA, while CPP improves to 14-6, 7-6 CCAA.

After the Broncos scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings, they exploded for seven runs in the fifth, courtesy of seven hits and two critical Toro fielding errors to bring the score to 10-0.

The Toros had a chance to make some noise an inning earlier after Bosson plunked Sako Chapjian and Brian Oda on consecutive pitches with one out, but the righty recovered to fan Chris Vopinek, and got out of the inning after Bronco first baseman Chris Miller brought back a Chris Allen foul ball from over the right field fence, where second baseman Charles Ball was waiting to control the deflection.

CSUDH finally broke through in the fifth after Ramirez doubled down the left field line to begin the frame, scoring after Ricky Vasquez changed places with a double of his own.

One inning later, a Chris Vopinek RBI single brought home Chapjain, who doubled to begin the inning, and was brought home one batter later after Chris Allen drove the first pitch he saw over the left-center field wall to cut CSUDH's deficit to 10-4.

The Toros continued their comeback, plating five runs on four hits in the sixth and benefiting on a pair of Bronco miscues that led to pinch-hitter Carlos Avila delivering the big blow with a 2RBI double to right field to bring the score to 10-9 as reliever Jonathan Boersma kept the Broncos off the board through the ninth.

CSUDH nearly tied the game in the ninth after Allen singled to begin the inning, but he was thrown out at second base trying to steal to end the game.

Allen finished with a 2-for-3, 3RBI, 2-run effort, with Brian Oda, Ricky Vasquez and Chapjian tallying a pair of hits in the loss.

CSUDH stater Sean Wardour suffered the loss after allowing 10 hits and 5 runs in 4.0 innings of work.  Reliever Jonathan Boersma was a bright spot for the Toros after shutting down the Broncos for the final five innings.

The two teams hook up again tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch set for a 2:00 pm start.
