Errors Costly in 10-7 Loss at Cal Baptist

Box Score
RIVERSIDE -- Senior Matthew Young led the Toros offense hitting 4-for-5 with three runs and one RBI, but it was not enough to erase crucial defensive Toro errors that eventually led to a Cal Baptist University 10-7 win.

As a result of the non-conference loss, CS Dominguez Hills falls to 8-18, while the Lancers improve to 24-6.

The Toros led the game off with an early one run lead, but did not hold the lead long after Cal Baptist answered right back with a two-run bottom half of the second inning.

Battling back once again, CSUDH took the lead in the top of the third with two runs produced after Danny Haley scored after Young connected for an RBI double to center.

Young, currently leading the conference in stolen bases, then stole third, his first of three on the afternoon, before being able to score the final run of the inning on a ground-out by Matt Akiyama.

Sean Wardour started the weekend two-game series and pitched solid, allowing just two earned runs in five innings of work.  In the bottom of the sixth, however, he ran into some trouble after offering two walks, a single, and a three-run homerun to bring a score of 7-3 in favor of the hosts.

The Lancer relievers, David Herd and Jesse Arreola, shut down the Toros through the next four innings allowing just four hits through seven innings of play.

After Cal Baptist nabbed three more runs in the bottom of the seventh the Toro bats showed life with one in the eighth and three in the ninth, but after committing errors in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings that led to unearned runs, the Toros came up three runs short, falling 10-7 to the Lancers.

Jonathan Boersma came in as relief for 2.0 innings and allowed three Lancer runs.

Akiyama contributed in the Toros offensive efforts, swinging 2-for-3 with a run scored and two batted in.

Along with Young, Akiyama and Sako Chapjian each marked extra base hits in Friday's contest.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team returns to Riverside on Saturday for the final game of the series at noon before returning home on Tuesday, April 3, when they will host Biola University.
