Toros' Offense Erupts in 20-7 Win Over Sioux Falls

Box Score
CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills offense erupted for the most runs scored in three years after Thursday's 20-7 non-conference rout over the visiting Cougars of the University of Sioux Falls.  Leading the CSUDH offense was Sako Chapjian who went 4-for-5 including two doubles, four runs scored, three runs batted in and a walk on the afternoon.

The 20 runs scored was the first for the Toros since March 12, 2009's 21-4 win over Cal Poly Pomona, and improved them to 8-17 on the year.  The Cougars, meanwhile, fall to 3-17.

Junior Matt Montgomery made his first start on the year, returning to the mound after a stellar four hitless innings in relief in his last appearance.  This time, he pitched another four innings of hitless ball after being staked to a 5-0 lead after four RBI singles and a sacrifice fly got the offense started early.

Montgomery allowed just one hit through five innings and kept the Cougars off the board, seeing his team's lead balloon to 8-0 after a 3-run fith courtesy of three more RBI hits.

The visitors, however, got to Montgomery in their sixth inning at-bat, drawing consecutive two-out walks to force him from the game en route to a three-run inning, only to have the Toros answer with five in the bottom half of the frame, the big blow coming on a Chapjian 2RBI double.

With the Toros up 13-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the hit parade continued, literally, to the tune of six runs on just two hits after three hit batters contributed to two of the runs, with a Spencer Maxey double bringing in two more for a 19-4 edge en route to the 20-7 final.

With almost a full line-up of changes throughout the game, Maxey and Brooks Noble connected for their first collegiate hits as Noble went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three runs batted in.  Maxey, meanwhile, finished the contest at 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs.

All but one CSUDH starter earned a hit on the day, with Carlos Avila, Maxey, Chris Vopinek and Ricky Vasquez joining Chapjian with multi-hit efforts.

Montgomery finished the day with the win, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on just two hits.

The Toro baseball team will hit the road this weekend for a two-day two-game series at Cal Baptist, before returning home to host Biola on April 3 on Toro Field.
