Toros Lose 11-4 and 5-3 to Broncos to Close Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
POMONA -- After splitting the first two games of the series that were decided by a single run each, host Cal Poly Pomona swept today's twinbill by 11-4 and 5-3 (8) scores.  Chris Allen led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate in game one, followed by 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI in game two.

With both losses, the Toros fall to 5-15, 3-13 CCAA, while the Broncos improve to 16-7, 9-7 CCAA.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the 2nd, CSUDH tied the game after Allen belted a 3-2 pitch down the right field line for a double to lead off the inning, before advancing to third on a sacrifice and scoring on a suicide squeeze by Danny Haley.

It was all down hill from there, however, as Cal Poly Pomona retook the lead with a pair of runs in their 2nd inning at-bat, before breaking the game open with four in the fourth, the big hit coming on a Jordan 2RBI single with two out to make it 7-1 Broncos.

CPP added another run in the sixth before the Toros got off the mat with two in the eighth, benefiting from a Bronco error for a run, before a Sako Chapjian sacrifice fly brought in the second run.

The Broncos, however, again answered, this time with three runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach before a Spencer Maxey groundout plated Carlos Avila in the ninth to account for the final scoring.

CSUDH starter Devon Ramirez took the loss after pitching 5.0 innings and allowing 10 hits and eight earned runs while Bronco starter Geoff Broussard improved to 6-0 after 8.0 innings of work that included nine strikeouts.

In the nightcap, senior Danny Torres allowed no runs through four innings of work, but the Broncos touched him for a pair of back-to-back jacks for a 2-0 lead, adding a single run two innings later to take a 3-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

In the seventh, the Toros offense woke up to the tune of four hits, tying the game on an Allen RBI single and Hector Gomez 2RBI double, where it remained until the bottom of the eighth when Chris Miller sent the second pitch he saw from Torres over the center field fence for the walk off home run, giving the Broncos a 3-to-1 series win.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team will step back on Toro field next week for a four-game series at home against the vistiting Cal State Stanislaus Warriors.  First game will be Friday at 3:00 p.m.
