Lumberjacks Too Strong for Toros in 68-55 Victory

ARCATA -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team started off the weekend of play with another road loss as they fell to the Humboldt State Lumberjacks for the second time this season in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.  Hillarie Perrin-Grant led the Toros in their efforts with 13 points.

The last time these two teams met, the Lumberjacks escaped the Torodome with a four-point win, but this time Humboldt State secured its win early on to improve their record to 15-6 overall and 11-6 in the CCAA.  Cal State Dominguez Hills remains at the bottom of the pack with a record 3-21 overall, 2-15 in conference play.

Humbooldt State took complete control from the 5:30 p.m. tipoff and never relinquished it.  In the first half, the Toros tried to stay in striking distance after the Lumberjacks hit 5-for-9 from 3-point land, while the Toros only hit 1 from outside the key in the first half. 

The Jacks stretched their lead to a game-high 16 points iafter Humboldt State's Danielle Gaumer sank her only three-pointer of the night with just 3:10 remaining in the half.  The Toros kept up the fight and wrapped up the first 20 minutes down 12 after two lay-ups by senior forward Zipporah Brown and Perrin-Grant.

In the second half the Toros dropped offensively to just 33 percent while the Lumberjacks got stronger, shooting 54.5 percent from the floor.  With strong shooting and 14 of the Toros shots attempts resulting in blocks, Humboldt State enjoyed its largest lead of 17 points en route ot the 68-55 win.

Defensively, Cal State Dominguez Hills was competitive as usual, allowing Humboldt State to only out-rebound them by four in both halves.  Leading on the boards was senior center Sherrie Hughes with 11 rebounds.  Zipporah Brown was also an asset with six boards. 

CSUDH was not only strong on rebounds, but they recorded seven steals on the night to the Lumberjacks' five.  Perrin-Grant and Porcha Davis each swiped two balls, with Brown and Lyndsay Heard notching a steal apiece.

Davis was another double-digit scorer on the night with 11 points.  Hughes also chipped in eight to contribute offensively.

Four Lumberjacks scored in the double-digits: Bree Halsey led the game with 15 points, Lisa Petty had 12 points, Kayla Williams and Caitie Richards had 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Another huge asset to the Humboldt State offense was junior guard Patrice Saindon, who dished five assists.

The Toros will look to forge a road split with a repeat decision when they play Sonoma State on Saturday night, after capturing their first CCAA win against the Seawolves earlier this season at the Torodome.  Tip-off in Rohnert Park will be at 5:30 p.m.
