Toro Aces Super on Final Day of Best of West Tournament

TURLOCK -- Befitting the hype that is "Super Bowl Sunday," Cal State Dominguez Hills' two super pitchers lived up to their hype today as Stephanie Jimenez (pictured) and Lauren Harper tossed complete-game shutout wins on the final day of the Best of the West Invitational.

With the 2-0 win over Metro State and the 6-0 win over Western Washington, CSUDH's third straight after dropping the first two games by a single run each, the Toros improve to 3-2 on the young year.

The opener was a pitcher's duel between Jimenez and Metro State's Brittany Moss for the first four innings, as netiher offense was able to muster any runs.

That all changed in the fifth when a Jackie Reyes double and Catherine Brown single to start the frame both were cashed in by Jessica Hall, who punched a two-out 2RBI single to the opposite field.

That was more than enough for Jimenez, who fanned 10 batters against just one walk and one hit in the win and faced just two batters above the minimum 21 for a 7.0 inning game.

In fact, Jimenez was so dominating, she fanned at least one batter in all but one inning, and following the inning Metro State didn't fan, Jimenez struck out the side for good measure.

Harper then took her turn to toss a complete-game shutout, scattering just two hits while fanning six batters against zero walks.

CSUDH's offense scored single runs in the 2nd, 5th and 6th frames before notching three in the 7th to complete the scoring, courtesy of a Melissa Pacheco RBI base knock and two WWU errors that accounted for a pair of unearned runs.

The Toros open their home season this Friday against St. Martin's on Friday at 12 noon, before hosting Humboldt State Saturday and Sunday to kick off CCAA play.
