Toro Aces Deal 20 Ks in 2-1 and 5-1 Sweep Over St. Martin's

CARSON -- Junior aces Lauren Harper and Stephanie Jimenez showed why they could be the top 1-2 punch in the CCAA, combining for 20 strikeouts as Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 2-1 and 5-1 sweep over visiting St. Martin's on a picture perfect day on Toro Diamond, moving the Toros to 5-2 overall with their fifth-straight win.

After the Saints scored early on two doubles in the first inning, Harper settled in and matched Saints pitcher Sam Munger pitch for pitch, allowing just two hits the rest of the way.

CSUDH's offense tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth after a Christina Chavez single to begin the frame and a stolen base set the stage for pinch hitter Elizabeth Jimenez, whose single to the catcher forced an errant throw that allowed Chavez to scamper in with the tying score.

That's where the tally remained until the Toros' final at-bat when Catherine Brown reached on an SMU miscue, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and was driven home by Veronica Vazquez's scorcher up the middle on a 1-2 offering.

Harper used 91 pitches total in fanning 10 batters against just two walks to improve to 2-2 on the year, with Vazquez and Jessica Hall leading the offense with two hits apiece.

Jimenez followed her teammate's lead in the nightcap with an 80 pitch effort, also fanning 10 against no walks.

With the score tied at 1-1 heading into the fourth inning, consecutive doubles by Hall and Melissa Pacheco gave the Toros the lead for good, and a 3-run fifth inning
, courtesy of a Khryssi Steele RBI single, a bases loaded walk by Chavez and another RBI single by Paige Rhodes capped an inning that could've been more as CSUDH left the bases loaded in the frame.

That was plenty for Jimenez, who allowed just one hit over her final five innings of work in the win.

Steele led the offense with two hits and Hall with two runs scored as all but two Toros collected at least one hit.

CSUDH opens CCAA play tomorrow morning as Humboldt State makes its every-other-year visit to Carson, with first pitch of game one set for 11:00 am on Toro Diamond.  The twinbill can be heard live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live, with David Smock handling the play-by-play duties.
