Softball Salvages Late Game For 2012's First Win at BWI

TURLOCK -- Cal State Dominguez Hills salvaged its third and final game during day one of the Best of the West Invitational, taking a 5-1 win over Dominican after falling in two one-run decisions earlier.

With the win, CSUDH moves to 1-2 on the year.

The Toros scored three in the first and two in the third against Dominican, with Christina Chavez and Daisy Beltran knocking home four of the runs.

Junior Lauren Harper and sophomores Melissa Pacheco (pictured) and Karen Peterson did the rest, limiting Dominican to five hits over seven innings, with Pacheco's 1.1 innings of relief work giving her the win.

Chavez, Beltran, Khryssi Steele and Jessica Hall led the offense with two hits apiece in the win.

Earlier in the day, the Toros got their 2012 season off to a rocky start, dropping a 3-2 decision to Cal State San Marcos, with Harper tossing a complete game in the loss in which all five runs were scored in the first three frames.

In game two, the Toros scored a run in the second, but host Cal State Stanislaus tied the game in the 6th before scoring the game-winner in the top of the 8th on a wild pitch to keep CSUDH winless in the early going.

The Toros continue the Best of the West tournament tomorrow, starting with a 10 am showdown against Metro State.
