Toros Feeling Young After Salvaging Twinbill in 4-3 Nightcap Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CARSON -- Junior Matthew Young helped ease the pain of an opening game meltdown in which a grand slam in the top of the 9th by visiting Cal State L.A. set the stage for their comeback win by launching a 2-2 offering over the center field fence to give the Toros a 4-3 decision in the nightcap.

With the victory, the Toros move to 4-7, 2-6 CCAA, while the Golden Eagles fall to 9-4, 6-2 CCAA after winning three of four games.

The Toros built an early 3-0 lead in the nightcap after an RBI single by Brian Oda and 2RBI double by Danny Haley spotted starter Devon Ramirez a cushion.

That's where the game remained until the fifth when CSULA plated one unearned run, followed by two more to tie one inning later.

CSUDH, however, looking to get game one's bad taste out of its collective mouth, did just that after Young went yard to salvage one of four games in the series between the cross-town rivals.

Oda picked up his first win of the season after tossing 1.1 innings of work, fanning three with no walks.

In the opener, Cal State L.A.'s Brian Compton belted a 1-1 offering from relief pitcher Chris Vopinek over the left field fence with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, tying the contest and propeling the visitors to a come-from-behind 7-6 win over the Toros, wasting a gritty performance by CSUDH starter Danny Torres who went 8.0 innings, fanning 4 against just one walk in 107 total pitches.

The opener was scoreless until the fourth when singles by Ricky Vasquez and Drew Rodela to begin the inning led to the game's first run after Vopinek followed a sacrifice bunt with a squeeze to bring hom Vasquez.

That's where the score remained until the top of the sixth when a Duran double brought home both runners at the corners for a CSULA 2-1 lead, only to have the Toros equalize in their at-bat on a Sako Chapjian RBI double to left center that scored Rodela.

CSUDH looked to seize control of the game in the eighth with 4 runs on 3 hits, the big blows coming on RBI singles by Chapjian and Matt Akiyama, an RBI walk by Matthew Young and a Golden Eagle throwing error to put the hosts up 6-2, but Compton's slam tied the game before a Toro error led to the eventual game-winning run for the visitors.

Rodela finished with a 3-for-4 effort, with Chapjian going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI in the loss.

The Toros host Azusa Pacific on Tuesday, February 28, with first pitch set for 2:00 pm.  The game can be heard live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
