It's Deja Vu All Over Again After Another 6-5 Loss to Cal State L.A.

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Groundhog Day happened 22 days ago, but it must seem like yesterday to the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team after dropping its second-consecutive 6-5 decision to Cal State L.A.

The Toros are now 1-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, 3-6 overall.  The Golden Eagles will head to Carson for the final two games of the series with a record of 9-3 overall, 5-1 in conference play.

The night started off right for CSUDH, scoring a run early in the first inning.  Junior outfielder, Matthew Young, started it off with a double to centerfield, with Matt Akiyama following with a single through tthe left side to advance Young to third.  Sako Chapjian then reached first on a fielder's choice, allowing Young to touch home and score the first run of the game.

CSUDH left-hander Nick Plantz started for the Toros, allowing one in the second inning and one in the third.  The Toros were able to get Plantz a couple more runs in the third inning to keep the lead at 3-2 in favor of Dominguez Hills.

Chapjian began the scoring in the third after taking advantage of a Golden Eagle third baseman error, reaching first.  Drew Rodela, who was the Toros leader Thursday night, singled through the left side and was followed by a Ricky Vasquez single and a walk by catcher Ernie Cabral that scored both Chapjian and Rodela to put two more runs on the board for the Toros.

Plantz would only last one more full inning as the hosts took the lead for the first time in the game after four Golden Eagles crossed the plate.

Coming in for relief with the bases loaded in the fifth was Brandon Quezada, allowing two of Plantz's runs to score and bring the score to 6-3 for the Eagles.

CSUDH added more pressure on Cal State L.A.'s lead after scoring two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to come within just one run.  Devon Ramirez led the rally after an error by the left fielder, then against a new pitcher Matthew Young singled through the left side to score Ramirez.  Young then stole second and advanced to third before Chapjian scored him with a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Eagles first in relief was senior left-hander Nick Rodarte, who shut down the Toros in the next two innings, striking out four Dominguez Hills hitters.

Young led the Toros Friday night hitting 3-for-5 with a double, two runs, and an RBI on the night.  Rodela had another great night at the plate hitting 3-for-5 as well with a double and a run.

Down by just one run in the top of the ninth, Chris Vopinek led off with a base on balls.  To follow were three strikeouts to finish in a Cal State L.A. win.

The two teams will wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader in Carson with an 11 a.m. first pitch.  Tomorrow's game will also be broadcasted live on Toro Sports Network, with David Smock beginning the pre-game at 10:45 a.m.
