Toros Fall Short in 6-5 Loss at Cal State L.A.

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team fell short after giving up a ninth inning run to the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles, falling 6-5 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest Thursday night.

The Toros are now 1-4 in conference play, while the Golden Eagles improve to 4-1 in the CCAA.  Overall the Toros are 3-5, the Eagles are 8-3.

First baseman Drew Rodela was stellar at the plate going 2-for-2, hitting a double while scoring a run and knocking in two of his Toro teammates.

CSUDH's starting pitcher Sean Wardour gave up three early runs before the Toros pushed a run across in the top of the fourth after a wild pitch plated Chris Allen, who started the frame with a leadoff double.

The Golden Eagles scored single runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, before the Toros plated three in the eighth inning to bring the score to 5-4.

Toro pinch-hitter Matt Akiyama led off the inning with a base on balls before Carlos Avila singled through the left side to advance Akiyama to second.  Rodela then connected for a double to center field to score Akiyama, but Avila was thrown out at home plate from centerfield to shortstop to home.

With two outs, Sako Chapjian continued the rally by reaching on a fielding error, advancing Rodela home.  After two more singles through the left side by Ernie Cabral and Chris Vopinek, Toros' Devon Ramirez, who pinch ran for Chapjian, was able to score the final run of the inning.

Hector Gomez came in as relief for Wardour in the seventh and shut down the Golden Eagle offense in both the seventh and the eighth innings, allowing Rodela to knock home his second RBI of the night to tie the game in the ninth.

Gomez's luck ran out in the ninth, however, after a CSULA double scored a runner from first to take the game 6-5.

Contributing to Rodela's strong offensive night was Chris Allen hitting 1-for-3 with a run and a double.  Matthew Young was also one of the three Toros to hit doubles in Thursday's contest.

Gomez was credited with the loss after 2.0 innings of work with two hits, an earned run, and striking out three batters.

Sean Wardour pitched 6.0 innings with five runs on 11 hits and eight strikeouts.

The Toros will look to rectify their loss tomorrow night, when they will play game two of the four-game series at the Cal State L.A.  First pitch will be at 6 p.m. under the lights.
