Program-best win streak hits 15 consecutive

CARSON -- Already the CSUDH record holder for strikeouts in a single game, junior pitcher Lauren Harper added another record to her belt after tossing a complete-game no-hitter against #22 Hawai'i Pacific in #20 CSUDH's 3-2 opening game win of this afternoon's twinbill, before the Toros used another dramatic rally to take a 5-3, 9-inning nightcap.

With the win, the Toros extended their program-best winning streak to 15 games in moving to 15-2 overall.

Harper accomplished her feat despite three errors behind her, all contributing to both Sea Warrior runs.  The San Diego native fanned nine batters against three walks, and was aided by Jessica Hall's 2-for-3, 2RBI performance, including the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

This feat marks the 11th time a CSUDH pitcher has tossed a no-no, the last coming on April 20, 2006, as Kristine Minter shut down CS San Bernardino on the road.

Sophomore Veronica Vazquez also added two hits in the win as Harper faced just 25 batters in the game, four more than the minimum 21 required for a 7 inning contest.

In the nightcap, CSUDH wasted little time in getting runs on the board as 3 hits and an HPU error brought in three for the hosts.

That looked like plenty for game two starter Stephanie Jimenez, who shut down the Sea Warriors through five innings.

In the sixth, however, the visitors strung together four hits to tie the game at 3-3, knocking Jimenez from the game.

Harper then entered and proceeded to retire the lone batter she faced to escape the jam, leaving two runners on base.

CSUDH had a golden opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning after a leadoff double by Daisy Beltran and Paige Rhodes single, but after a line out and Vazquez reaching on a fielder's choice to load the bases, HPU pitcher Melissa Kirby got out of the jam by retiring the Toros' two hottest hitters in Hall and reigning CCAA Player of the Week Christina Chavez to keep the game knotted.

In the ninth, however, one-out singles by Hall and Chavez set the stage for Brittany Brenner, who belted a would-be home run over the right center field fence to bring home both runners, but was called out for runner assistance in a premature walk-off celebration.

Harper picked up the win to improve to 7-2 on the year, tossing 3.1 additional innings of no-hit ball to bring her day's statline to 10.1 innings, no hits, no earned runs, 13 strikeouts and three walks.

Brenner, Hall and Vazquez led the offense with two hits apiece, while Hall scored two of the runs in the win.

CSUDH, now 15-2, 8-0 CCAA, will take to the road this weekend to face Cal State Stanislaus in league action on Friday and Saturday, before returning home the first weekend of March to host San Francisco State.
