Toros Drop Postponed Game to Gators 14-7, Followed by 14-9 Loss to End Series

CARSON -- Visiting San Francisco State used a 7-run sixth inning in game two of yesterday's doubleheader, and it was enough in the Gators' 14-7 win to conclude the postponed game before taking an offensive 14-9 decision to give SFSU a 3-to-1 series win.

Matt Akiyama (pictured) led the Toros with a 2-3, 3RBI performance in the nightcap, with Matthew Young also adding two hits, and two runs scored.

Starter Danny Torres went 4.2 innings, while Brandon Quezada went 0.1 en route to allowing 3 earned runs in taking the loss.

In the series closer, the Gators turned a 2-2 deadlock heading into the top of the fifth into a seeming blowout after scoring 12 runs on nine hits and two Toro errors, nearly batting around twice in the frame.

CSUDH made it interesting after Nick Plantz came in as a pinch hitter with two on and no out in the sixth, and sent a 3-1 offering and the 104th and final pitch from Gator starter Branden Petrangelo over the right field fence to cut SFSU's lead in half,

It was too little, too late, however as reliever Jeff Clegg got out of the sixth inning jam to close the door on the CSUDH offense the rest of the way in the win, surviving a 2-run ninth courtesy of an Akiyama 2RBI double with the bases juiced.

Petrangelo picked up the win to square his record at 1-1, while Toro starter Jonathan Boersma took the loss in falling to 0-1 on the year, allowing 5 earned runs on 7 hits, and plunking three Gators in the process.

Young and Sako Chapjian led the Toros with two hits apiece, including two RBI for Chapjian in the DH spot.

On the hill, Brandon Quezada rebounded from yesterday's subpar performance by tossing 4.1 innings of 6-hit, shutout ball.

The Toros, now 3-4, 1-3 CCAA, will take on cross-town rival Cal State L.A. in their next league series, with the first two single games at Reeder Field on Thursday and Friday, before a double-header at Toro Field on Saturday, February 25, beginning at 11:00 am.
