Chico State Ruins Senior Day in 66-57 Win

The men's basketball seniors (L-R): Girard II, Jenkins, Willhite, Bias, Andrews, Gee

CARSON -- Tied atop the CCAA standings entering tonight's contest, visiting Chico State refused to succumb to the emotion and sentiment of Cal State Dominguez Hills' "Senior Night" en route to a hard-fought 66-57 win over the Toros.  Senior Wayne Andrews tied for game-high scoring honors with 16 points.

With the loss, CSUDH's fifth in the last six games, the Toros fall to 12-10, 11-9 CCAA, while the Wildcats reach the 20-win mark with a 20-6 ledger, including 14-6 in the CCAA.

The Wildcats built a 9-point lead early behind 8 points by Damario Sims and 7 by Amir Carraway, only to have the Toros answer behind 8 by Andrews and 7 by Robert Willhite to keep CSUDH within striking distance at 40-36 Chico entering the half.

CSUC, however, looking to stay atop the CCAA with a win, fired on all cylinders after the break, taking a 62-49 lead with just under nine minutes left in regulation, a margin that held until the 57-66 final.

The Toros shot just 37.2% for the game compared to 44.7% for the Wildcats, who remained atop the league standings with Cal Poly Pomona at 14-6.

Before the contest, the Toros honored six seniors playing in their final game in the Torodome in Andrews, Brian Gee, Van Girard II, Rashad Bias, Cornell Jenkins and Willhite, the lone four year member of the squad.

CSUDH concludes its regular season on the road next week, taking on San Francisco State and Cal Poly Pomona.
