Toros End Skid With 78-71 Win Over CS Stanislaus

CARSON -- Seniors Robert Willhite (pictured) and Wayne Andrews combined for 42 points on 13-of-23 shooting from the floor, with 9-of-13 coming from behind the arc, as Cal State Dominguez Hills ended a four-game skid with a come-from-behind 78-71 win over visiting Cal State Stanislaus to kick off the final homestand of the year.

With the win, the Toros improve to 12-9, 11-8 CCAA, while the Warriors remain just one win or one Cal State East Bay loss from clinching the eighth and final spot in the upcoming CCAA Championship Tournament in falling to 13-10, 9-10 CCAA.

It looked early as if CSUDH brought home the road woes that plagued them over its last four games as the visitors raced to a 16-5 lead with just five minutes elapsed in the game.

CSUS played up to its namesake in the first 20 minute session, building a game-high 19-point lead twice before settling for a 37-21 edge entering the break.

Whatever head coach Damaine Powell said to the Toro at the half proved inspirational as CSUDH cut its deficit to single digits after an old-fashioned 3-point play by Andrews brought the score to 41-33 with 15:58 left in regulation.

That deficit decreased over the next three minutes after Andrews found his stroke from long range, nailing consecutive treys to bring the hosts to within 45-44, before Willhite gave CSUDH its first lead of the game on the Toros' next possession.

It was a night-and-day second half for the Toros as they took a 62-53 lead at the 8:02 mark, courtesy of a Van Girard II triple, where the lead hovered until the final 78-71 count.

The Toros sizzled after the break, hitting 53.3% of their shots and draining 11-of-21 from long range.  CSUS nearly matched CSUDH's long-range acumen with a 9-of-29 effort, but fizzled at the free throw line where the visitors hit just 16-of-24.

Reggie Jones matched Willhite for game-high honors with 22, nearly scoring at will in the first half of play with an array of offensive shots.

CSUDH willed itself back into the contest with a dominating 41-to-28 edge on the boards as six Toros recorded at least four rebounds on the night.

The Toros will host co-league leader Chico State tomorrow night on "Senior Day," after the Wildcats fell to Cal State L.A. earlier this evening.  Tomorrow also will be "Think Pink" night and the "CCAA Canned Food Drive" night, with all festivities being heard live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
