Toros Win 9-7 After 6-Run Ninth Inning at Biola

Box Score

LA MIRADA -- Senior Ricky Vasquez led the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team to a six-run 9th inning to secure a 9-7 win at Biola University Tuesday afternoon, improving its record to 2-1 while the host Eagles fall to 4-6 overall.
The Toros took an early lead for the third-consecutive game with a single run in the top of the first inning.  Carlos Avila led off with a walk and was followed by a double down the left line by Matthew Young before scoring on a Sako Chapjian ground out.

After the Eagles answered back in the bottom of the second after Toro starting pitcher Jonathan Boersma offered up a solo homerun to Biola's catcher Nick Covyeau, Boersma settled down and retired 12-consecutive batters while not allowing another hit until the bottom of the sixth.

In the sixth, Biola plated three runs on four singles to take a 4-1 lead, only to have the Toros answer with two runs in the top of the 7th as Avila doubled with the bases loaded to bring home two runs and cut the Eagle lead to 4-3 after an error loaded the bases one batter earlier.

Biola tacked on what looked like a pair of insurance runs in the eighth to take a 6-3 advantage heading into the final frame, but the Toros had other ideas as Vasquez led off the inning with a double down the left field line.  After the next two batters reached base on consecutive Biola miscues to give CSUDH an unearned run, another error loaded the bases for Matthew Young, who roped a single up the middle to tie the score at 6-6.

A wild pitch by Biola's reliever Javier Martinez moved runners into scoring position, and a Drew Rodela double into the left field gap and a Matt Akiyama sacrifice fly brought home two runs for an 8-6 lead, before Rodela crossed home plate himself two batters later.

Chris Vopinek transitioned from the field to the mound in the bottom of the ninth inning, and allowed a run before shutting down the Eagle offense to save the game for CSUDH.

Avila, Young, Rodela and Vasquez led the Toro charge with two hits apiece, with Avila and Young bringing home 2RBI each.

Reliever Hector Gomez picked up his first win as a Toro after 2/3rds of an inning, with Vopinek earning his first save in Cardinal and Gold.

Boersma wrapped up the day with 5.2 innings pitched, offering up five hits and allowing four earned runs with two strikeouts.  Gomez secured the win, while Vopinek earned the save.

Vasquez finished the day hitting 2-for-5 with two runs and two doubles.  Avila was 2-for-4 with two runs, a double, and two runs batted in.  Young also stepped up at the plate with two RBIs, while hitting 2-for-5 on the afternoon.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team, now 2-1 on the year, will play at home this upcoming weekend when they host San Francisco State for a four-game series to kick off CCAA play, starting on Friday afternoon at 1 pm on Toro Field.
