Toros Hold On For 8-7 Win To Open Season Against Oregon Tech

Box Score
CARSON -- Senior pitcher Danny Torres set the tone for the home opener with 5.0 strong innings of work, and was helped by two first-inning blasts as the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team opened its 2012 season with a heart-stopping 8-7 win over the Oregon Tech Owls Friday afternoon.

The Toros will move into the weekend with an overall record of 1-0, while the Owls fall to 2-3 overall.

Senior right-hander Torres was solid through five innings, only allowing three hits and striking out four hitters.  Throughout the first five innings the Toros offense gave Torres some cushion scoring three runs early.

After Carlos Avila led off with his homerun, Matthew Young took advantage of some shaky pitching and walked.  Young then stole second to set the plate for Sako Chapjian, who homered to left center to bring the score to 3-0 with just one out.  Although Brian Oda was able to reach on a single up the middle, the Toros were unable to produce any more first inning runs.

Oregon Tech's starter Craig Kathol was replaced on the mound after four innings pitched, holding the Toro lead to just three runs.

The game remained 3-0 throughout the rest of Torres' innings at work and the Toros were able to gain one more run in the bottom of the the fifth.

Jonathan Boersma came in to relieve in the sixth inning and was lights out through the seventh.  The bottom of the seventh inning led to more Toro scoring led by Drew Rodela's single to right field with just one out.  Chapjian walked, and was followed by a one run double to right center by Brian Oda, scoring Rodela and advancing Chapjian to third base all with less than two outs.

Chris Vopinek then singled to the grass and advanced on a fielding error, allowing both Chapjian and Oda to touch home plate.

The Owls brought in relief pitcher Codey Barrett after reliever Ryan Grant, who entered the game in the fifth for stater Kathol, gave up four earned runs in just 2.1 innings of work.  Matt Akiyama wrapped up the derby with a single to left field scoring Vopinek, the fourth and final run of the inning

In the final two innings of play the Owls answered back with a combined seven runs, four in the top of the eighth and three in the top of the ninth.

Boersma led off the eighth allowing two earned runs before senior Brandon Quezada came in for relief and allowed two runs on one hit with no outs gained.  Devon Ramirez then entered and, although he wrapped up the four-run inning, he allowed three earned runs in 0.2 innings on the mound.

The bottom of the ninth brought more excitement with the Toros entering two more pitchers to try and hold off the boosted Owl offense.  With two outs and runners on first and second, Benny Vo, who came in for Ramirez, was replaced by junior transfer Hector Gomez.  Gomez faced his first batter, Dylan Rogers and allowed him to reach first on a walk.  With two outs and the bases loaded, Gomez was able to fan off the final hitter and secure the win with a save.

Offensively, the Toros were led by Chapjian's 2-for-4 effort with two runs and two RBIs.  Carlos Avila also had a strong day at the plate going 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.  Brian Oda wrapped up the the day 2-for-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI.

The Toros travel to San Bernardino Saturday for non-conference doubleheader against the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes.  First pitch at 11 a.m.
