CARSON -- Visiting Cal State L.A. capitalized on 21 Cal State Dominguez Hills turnovers in the CCAA opener for both teams en route to an 86-69 win for the Golden Eagles tonight in Carson on "Carmelita Jeter Day," a day long celebration on the CSUDH campus honoring the CSUDH alum and 2012 Olympic medalist.

With the loss, CSUDH falls to 0-2, 0-1 CCAA, while CSULA improves to 2-0, 1-0 CCAA.

The Toros jumped to a 5-0 lead, stretching it to 21-14 with 12:41 left in the first half courtesy of 6 points by Denisha Lundy and Kielyn Wilson, and four each by Breanne Garcia and Monay Lee.  That's where the score remained for nearly three minutes until a Kaija Powell old fashioned 3-point play ended the drought at 9:53, eventually catching the Toros and taking their first lead of the game on a triple by Tessondra Williams at the 2:45 mark for a 31-30 lead.

That trey energized the visitors en route to 38-30 lead with just over a minute left in the half, before a pair of foul shots by Lee cut the lead to 38-32 entering the half.

After the half, CSULA continued its hot shooting, taking a double-figure lead just 39 seconds into the period, and pushing it to 16 at 51-36 on a Devin Riezebos free throw.

CSUDH, however, cut its deficit to 7 at 53-46 on a pair of free throws by the ever-hustling Garcia, only to see CSULA make a run of its own in taking a 62-49 lead at the second of three media timeouts.

Bolstered by their 45.5% shooting percentage after the break, the visitors held a double-digit lead through most of the second half, with a Garcia lay-up at the 3:34 mark the only bucket to make it a single-digit game as CSULA nailed 16-of-18 free throws down the stretch to fend off any would-be Toro rallies.

Garcia finished with 18 points after scoring 11 against D-I San Diego State on Sunday, with Jamie Robinson chipping in 14 points before fouling out late in the second half.

The Toros terrorized the boards to the tune of a decisive 53 to 39 edge that included 26 offensive boards led by Robinson's 14, but CSULA scored 21 points off of CSUDH turnovers to turn the tide in the Golden Eagles' favor.

Williams led the visitors with 19 points, with Maryum Jenkions chipping 18 as four CSULA players reached the double-figure plateau.

At halftime, the Toros honored Jeter during the final stop of her afternoon-long stay at her alma mater, as CSUDH President Dr. Willie Hagan and CSUDH Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Dr. Sue Borrego presented the 2012 Olympian with an assortment of Toro presents, culminating with the unveiling of a banner created in her honor, immortalizing her triple medal achievement.

Earlier in the day, Jeter spoke at the University Theatre prior to being honored at a reception in the University Library.

The Toros will take to the road next, competing in the Cal State L.A. Thanksgiving Classic this Friday and Saturday, with Friday's contest against Point Loma Nazarene University.  CSUDH will return home on December 5 to face Cal Baptist for the final home game of the calendar year.
