Division I San Diego State Rolls By CSUDH in Season-Opener

Box Score
SAN DIEGO -- Division I San Diego State rolled to a 66-30 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the Toros' season opener, holding CSUDH to just six field goals for the game including just two in the second half.  Breanne Garcia led the Toros with 11 points, with nine coming at the foul line.

After a pair of exhibitions against non-Division II opponents, the Toros opened against the Aztecs taking a 3-0 lead as Robynn Cochran opened the contest with a 3-pointer off a Jamie Robinson assists, and kept the game close in the first 10 minutes of play, trailing just 17-12 with 9:53 left in the first half.

SDSU, however, stretched that lead to 28-13 over the next five minutes of play, entering halftime having doubled CSUDH's output at 34-17 as the Toros made just 4-of-17 shots from the field, including a 1-of-5 tally from long range, courtesy of Cochran's game-opening trey.

The Aztecs increased their lead early in the second half, taking a 22-point lead on a 3-pointer by Courtney Clements with 18:25 left in the game, three of her game-high 25 points, before pushing it to a 35-point cushion on a pair of Ahjalee Harvey free throws at the 11:09 mark.

The Toros got their deficit back in the 20s on a Kielyn Wilson free throw that brought the score to 58-29, but SDSU closed the game on an 8-1 run over the final 8:41, securing the easy 66-30 win.

CSUDH shot just 19.4% from the field and 14.3% from long range, with its saving grace coming from the charity stripe where the Toros made 17-of-30.

SDSU, meanwhile, made 43.3% of its attempts from the floor and 31.3% from downtown, but had trouble at the charity stripe, missing half of its 18 attempts.

Guard Denisha Lundy pulled down a team-best 7 boards, which tied two Aztecs for game-high honors as CSUDH was out-rebounded by a respectable margin, 39 to 32.

Overall, CSUDH earned 19 points from its bench, led by Garcia's 11 and Wilson's six.  Of the starters, Jamie Robinson tallied five with Cochran and Monay Lee each chipping three.

The Toros will get back to Division II action this Tuesday as they open both their home and CCAA schedule at 7 pm, hosting crosstown rival Cal State L.A.  The game will be streamed live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live, and will feature CSUDH alum and 2012 Olympic Medalist Carmelita Jeter as special guest coach to conclude "Carmelita Jeter Day" on the CSUDH campus.  The Toro Sport Network pregame show will begin at 6:30 pm.
