Toros Make it Seven-Straight After 3-0 Win at Cal Poly Pomona

CSUDH clinches berth in next week's CCAA tournament, hosted by the Toros

Box Score
POMONA -- Riding a six-match win streak and a No. 6 ranking in this week's NCAA West Region poll, the Cal State Dominguez Hills made it seven-straight after a convincing 3-0 victory at Cal Poly Pomona this afternoon, with Tony Alfaro notching his first goal of the season on a free kick, good for the game-winner.

With the shutout, the Toros not only move into a first place tie with cross-town rival Cal State L.A. in the CCAA south division after the Golden Eagles and San Francisco State Gators battled to a 2OT draw, but also clinch berth as one of four teams into next weekend's CCAA Championship tournament, hosted by the Toros.

CSUDH wasted little time in getting on the board as the host Broncos committed a foul, giving Alfaro a free kick opportunity.

The redshirt freshman made the most of it, bending his attempt from 20 yards into the upper left corner and past CPP keeper Anthony Iniguez for a 1-0 lead at 7:04.

Junior Jio Santana made it 2-nil just 40 seconds later after a pair of Broncos were issued yellow cards, allowing Santana to line up a penalty kick and guide it home.

That's where the score looked to stay heading into the break until Aaron Salazar stole the ball at midfield and sent a through ball to Sebastian Cortez, whose blast beat Iniguez for an insurmountable 3-0 cushion.

Despite the lopsided score, the Toros tallied just one more attempt than the Broncos, while CPP tallied 5 corners compared to just 3 for CSUDH.

CPP back-up goalie Kris Minton registered 3 saves in the second half, while CSUDH starter Trey Mitchell and second-half goalie Juan Quiroz each tallied one save in the combined shutout.

CSUDH concludes its regular season on Sunday at San Francisco State, with first kick set for 11:30 am.
