Cardinal-Hot Toros Continue Cardinal-Hot Run in 3-0 Win Over UCSD on "Senior Day'

The five Toro seniors in Soto, Evans, Aurelus, Dunn and Flores
Box Score
CARSON -- Playing with a passion and urgency that lacked at the start of the season, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros used a stingy defense to take their fifth-straight win, this time a 3-0 shutout over UC San Diego on "Senior Day."  Fittingly, senior Dimitri Aurelus provided the game-winner with his first goal of the year in the 20th minute.

With the win, CSUDH improves to 8-5-1, 8-4 CCAA and moves to within two points of the south division lead, while UCSD falls to 7-4-2, 6-3-2 CCAA.

As is the custom on "Senior Day," all five seniors in Aurelus, Darin Dunn, Christian Soto, Anthony Flores and Ryan Evans started, and made that decision pay quick dividends.

Scoreless heading into the 19th minute, Jose Vaca received a clear from Tony Alfaro, and sent a long through ball towards the UCSD goal.

Using his speed, Aureles passed his defender and caught up with the ball, leaving him with a 1v1 he easily won against UCSD keeper Cameron McElfresh with an over the top tip at 19:29

The Toros doubled their edge in the 37th minute as Jio Santana delivered a through ball into the 18 yard box, where Wyatt Stucker sent a screamer past McElfresh far post, one of six shots in the period compared to just one for the visitors.

It was more of the same after the break as CSUDH enjoyed a 7-4 shot advantage, finally capitalizing on its aggressive play at the 80:44 mark when Aaron Salazar headed a ross to Richard Molina, whose one-touch beat reserve keeper Josh Cohen for the game's final score.

The Toros finished with a 13-5 edge in shots, although UCSD earned a 10-4 advantage in corners.

Prior to the contest, CSUDH bade a fond farewell to its five seniors after acknowledging UCSD's senior players.

CSUDH will look to make it six-straight against its arch-rival in Sonoma State on Friday, with first kick set for 7 pm in the Home Depot Center's Main Stadium.
