Toros Welcome 2012 With 43-40 Win Over Sonoma State

CARSON -- After dropping 10-straight to close 2011, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros opened 2012 with their first CCAA win of the year in a 43-40 decision over Sonoma State.  Lyndsay Heard topped all scorers with 12 points, adding 6 rebounds in the win.

The Toros now own a 2-12 overall record and are 1-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.  The Seawolves fall to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in confernce play.

Sonoma State took an early eight-point advantage over Dominguez in the first six minutes of play. 

As the first half went on the Toros came within two points at the 7:12 mark after a made jumper by Heard.  The Toros continued to excel offensively, wrapping up the first half with just a one-point deficit to the Seawolves.

Early in the second half, Siedah Wilson tied the score for the first time after sinking her first of two made free-throw shots.  Sonoma State was only able to take the lead once more before the Toros took control and the win.

CSUDH took advantage at the foul-line against the Seawolves, shooting 12-for-15 from the line, compared to just 6-for-18 for the Seawolves.  Sherrie Hughes was 4-for-4 from the line and Heard sank 4-for-5 of her foul shots. 

Defensively, CSUDH out-rebounded Sonoma State 37-27, led by Porcha Davis' eight boards, Ashley Hudson's seven and Heard's six.

Leaders for the Seawolves were Jaclyn Bisordi with nine points and Aly Conway with seven rebounds.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team will be playing for their second win of the new year and the season Saturday night when they host the Humboldt State Lumberjacks, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.  The game can be heard live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
