Balance Brings Fifth-Straight Win in 78-59 Decision Over Sonoma State


CARSON -- Junior guard Myron Green's 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field led a quartet of Toros in double-figure scoring as Cal State Dominguez Hills rolled to a 78-59 win over visiting Sonoma State, the squad's fifth-straight win.

With the win, CSUDH improves to 6-3 overall and 5-2 in league play, while SSU falls to 4-7 overall, and 2-5 in CCAA action.

The hosts continued the inspired play that bid a successfull farewell to 2011, taking a 16-7 lead over the Seawolves just 8:40 into the game.  A bucket by Wayne Andrews and a triple by Ryan Jefferson pushed the lead to 14 at 21-7, before another triple by Jefferson gave CSUDH its largest lead of the half at 29-11 en route to a 26-16 lead at the break.

CSUDH continued to push the pace after intermission as its lead reached 21 twice in the first five minutes of play, and hovered around the 20-point mark over the next 10 minutes, with a Green free throw giving the Toros a 23-point cushion at 65-42 with 7:14 left in regulation, allowing head coach Damaine Powell the opportunity to clear his bench.

The reserves kept their collective foot on the pedal in the 19-point rout, with the final 23-point cushion coming with just 25 ticks left in the game.

Wayne Andrews chipped in 13 points, Jefferson 12 and Everett Brown 10 as the Toros shot a blistering 53.8% from the floor for the game, aided by a sizzling 66.7% in the second half.

The Seawolves matched CSUDH's shooting acument with their own 57.9% success rate in which they made 15-of-20 after the break.

Andrews also chipped in a game-high 7 boards as CSUDH claimed the rebounding edge by 4 (21-to-17) in the win.

Justin Herold led SSU with 13 points off the bench, with reserves Sterling Arterberry's 12 and Jason Walter's 10 accounting for the high Seawolf scorers.

The Toros will host defending CCAA regular season champion Humboldt State tomorrow night in Carson after the Lumberjacks suffered a 68-48 thrashing at Cal State L.A. earlier tonight.  The game can be heard live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
