Toros Close First Half of CCAA Play With 60-55 Win Over San Francisco State

CSUDH pulls into 5-team tie atop CCAA standings

CARSON -- In a celebratory night that showcased the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's 2011 NCAA Champion 4x400 relay team at halftime, the Toro men's basketball team overcame an early 14-point deficit to visiting San Francisco State en route to a gritty 60-55 win that vaulted them into a 5-way tie atop the CCAA standings with the second half of play set to begin on Friday.

Junior George McGrew enjoyed a monster game of 18 points and eight boards, nailing 10-of-12 from the charity stripe, and helped improve the Toros to 9-5 overall and 8-4 in league play, while the Gators fall to 4-14, 2-10 CCAA.

Coming off a huge win last night against Cal Poly Pomona, the Toros were a step slow from the game's tip as the Gators built an 18-4 lead with nearly 10 minutes elapsed in the first half.

A lay-up by Ryan Jefferson halted SFSU's run briefly, allowing CSUDH to keep within striking distance.

Down 13, a McGrew bucket kick-started a 10-4 run that saw CSUDH climb to within 30-23 entering the half.

After the break, CSUDH got to within 32-30 on a pair of Cornell Jenkins free throws, only to have SFSU answer with an 8-0 run to regain momentum.

The Gators built another 10-point lead at the 12:38 mark, before two Myron Green free throws spurred an 8-0 run that again brought CSUDH to within two with just under 10 minutes left in regulation, before eventually taking the lead on a pair of McGrew foul shots.

CSUDH kept momentum donned in Cardinal and Gold en route to building a 7-point lead with 61 ticks left, nailing its final six free throws to ice the game in the 60-55 win.

Green added 14 points and 10 boards for the game's lone double-double, while Van Girard II chipped in nine boards and four points in the win.

SFSU's Nefi Perdomo topped all scorers with 21 points, reaching the coveted 1,000-point mark in only his third year of competition as a Gator.

CSUDH used its height advantage to the tune of a 50-to-40 rebound edge, swatting 6 blocks compared to just one for the Gators.

At the half, CSUDH honored Chanel Parker, Nancy Blake, Dora Baldwin, Breionna Jackson and Charlene Brown for their 2011 NCAA Championship in a touching ring presentation / banner unveiling ceremony.
