Toros on Wrong End of 59-58 Thriller in Turlock

TURLOCK -- Less than 24 hours after staging a comeback for the ages, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team just missed its second-consecutive comeback in a 59-58 heartbreaking loss to Cal State Stanislaus, despite Wayne Andrews' game-high 25 points.

With the loss, the Toros fall to 7-5, 6-4 CCAA, while the Warriors improve to 9-5, 5-5 CCAA.

For the second-consecutive night, CSUDH fell behind early, entering the half facing a 29-21 deficit.

And for the second-consecutive night, the Toros answered after the break.

After a pair of foul shots by Marcus Walters gave the hosts their biggest lead at 33-22 with 2:27 elapsed in the second half, Andrews scored five-consecutive to cut their deficit to just six, where CSUS' lead hovered for the next seven minutes.

Two Andrews free throws and a George McGrew basket brought CSUDH to within 41-40 with 9:49 left in regulation, only to have the Warriors play up to their namesake with an 8-0 run, the last two coming via a pair of Donald Gaines free throws.

CSUDH would answer with its final run of the night over the final seven minutes of play, taking its first lead since 2-0 on a Myron Green bucket with 27 seconds left to go.

A Warrior miss on their ensuing possession looked to put the Toros in control, but CSUS' Ronnie Sawyer grabbed the offensive board and was fouled, sinking both foul shots to put the hosts up one with 9 ticks left.

Andrews looked to bring his point total to 27 with the final shot of the game, but his attempt went awry, securing the win for the Warriors.

Andrews connected for 6-of-12 from the field and 11-of-13 from the foul line for his 25, with Green's 8-of-9 from the foul line aiding his 14 points.

Vince Fuller tallied 18 points as the lone Warrior in double-figure scoring as CSUS shot 41.2% from the field compared to just 34.7% for the Toros.

CSUDH will return home for consecutive weekends, hosting perennial power Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, with first tip set for 7:30 pm on the Dave Yanai Court in the Torodome.
