Late Heroics End Two-Game Skid in 1-0 Win Over UC San Diego

Box Score
CARSON -- Freshman Henry Calistro was on the winning end of a one-timer, tipping his shot past the diving UC San Diego keeper to give the Toros a hard-fought and physical 1-0 win over the visiting Tritons in the Home Depot Center's Main Stadium, ending a two-game skid as a rematch with No. 7 Cal State L.A. looms Sunday.

After being shutout twice last weekend, the Toros came out aggressive en route to a 5-1 shot advantage in the first 45-minute session in which they also enjoyed a 4-1 corner kick advantage, though failing to get on the scoreboard.

In the second half, however, offensive pushes by Jordan Rover, Miguel Vasquez and Ronald Ybarra kept the UCSD defense on its toes, often resulting in whistles.

The game remained scoreless until the 78th minute when Ybarra took a feed from Vasquez up the right sideline, and sent his pass to Rover.

The 2008 NCAA National Champion then dribbled past his defender and sent a cross to Calistro, whose one-timer beat Triton keeper Jesse Brennan near post the game's lone score.

The Toros also had a number of near misses earlier as a Ryan Evans first-half blast went off the crossbar, a Rover shot after a juke went off the post, and a Vasquez missile was speared by Brennan's right hand, the latter two coming after the break.

Junior Juan Quiroz picked up the win after seeing his first action of the 2011 campaign, playing all 45 minutes of the second half.

A total of 28 fouls were called on the teams, with three cautions issued.

The Toros, now 4-2-1, 2-2-1, travel across town to Cal State L.A. to battle the 7th-ranked Golden Eagles, with kcikoff set for 11:30 am in Jesse Owens Track.
