Toros Throw Scare Into #3 CS San Bernardino in 3-1 Loss

CARSON -- Facing the three-time defending West Region Champ and third-ranked Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes would be a tough task for anyone.  On this night the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros became the second team this year to take a set from CSUSB, and the first to do so within the standard 25. Sophomore #Abbey Prusa# helped her team with 11 kills and a team-high .320 hitting percentage to go along with three blocks.

Set one started slowly for CSUDH as they found themselves in an early 9-3 hole.  A quick three point run brought them within three before the Coyotes turned it on and gapped the Toros to a 25-13 final.  Freshman #Azieanna Smith# had two digs and kills a piece in the set.

CSUDH came out a played well to start set two, keeping the set within doubt early.  Momentum was still up for grabs when CSUSB again turned a managable deficit into an insurmountable gap, with the final being 25-16.  Set two saw sophomore #Elizabeth Krieger# show off all her balanced skill set with two kills, three assists and three digs.

In the third set the Toros played their best volleyball of the young season, smashing 18 kills with only one error for a monstrous .531 attack percentage.  The set started closely before CSUSB opened a 14-10 gap that cause CSUDH head coach #Jennifer Adeva# to call a time out.

The Toros would score 11 of the next 13 points and hold on to win the third set 25-18.  It was only the second time this season CSUSB lost a set with Prusa lighting it up with seven kills and one solo block in the set.

The fourth set saw CSUDH carry over the momentum and confidence they gained in the previous set, leading as late as 13-11.  The score was 18-all, however, when the Coyotes slowly finished off the set and match in a 25-21 final.  Krieger had five kills to go along with a dig and block assist.

The Toros became the first team to score more than 20 points in two sets against the third-ranked Coyotes thanks to a trio of Toros with 11 kills.  Krieger, Prusa and Smith each hit over .200 with Krieger and Smith each also adding nine digs.  Senior #Olivia White led the way with 37 assists while juniors Rose Greco and Delea Pursel# led with 12 digs and five blocks, respectively.

Cal State Dominguez Hills, now 1-7, 0-4 CCAA, will return to the road to face Sonoma State on Friday at 7:00pm in Rohnert Park.
