Toros Open Season With 2-1 Win Over Colorado Mesa

Box Score
CARSON -- Sophomore Miguel Vasquez took a cross deep in the goalmouth, and shuttled his shot past Colorado Mesa's 6-5 keeper near post to give Cal State Dominguez Hills a hard-fought 2-1 win over a game Maverick squad on a chilly Thursday night in the season opener for both squads.

The hosts wasted little time in scoring their first goal of the new season, as a CMU tackle inside its box resulted in a penalty kick attempt, on which senior Billy Gutierrez capitalized for a 1-0 lead at the 6:37 mark.

CSUDH looked to enter intermission with the edge until a Maverick cross eluded diving Toro keeper Markus Dickerson and settled onto the waiting feet of Phil Neuwirth, who deposited it near post for the equalizer in the 36th minute.

Physical defenses from both teams took center stage over the next 43 minutes as the two teams combined for three of the seven total cautions in the game, until Jordan Rover took a Wyatt Stucker feed and crossed to Vasquez, who knocked home the game-winner in the 79th minute.

Dickerson tallied a single save in the win as the visitors managed just four shots all game, while the Toros doubled their opponent's shot total on the night, with Maverick keeper Micah Conrads tallying four saves in the loss.

The Toros continue non-conference action on Saturday as Cal Baptist visits Toro Stadium for a 4:30 pm first kick.
