Toros Take 8-1 Win in Opener Before Splitting Saturday Twinbill Against Otters

13 Toro Student-Athletes recognized for their work in the classroom and community

CARSON -- On the eve of "Senior Day" for the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros baseball team, CSUDH used a pair of juniors to guide them to an 8-1 game one victory, before falling 4-3 to visiting CS Monterey Bay in the nightcap.  Junior Josh Corrales was spectacular in his final start in Cardinal and Gold for 2011, striking out 10 Otters in 7.0 innings, with just one run allowed.

For the second straight game the Otters led off the game with a hit, scoring one run to take an early 1-0.

The Toros power bats responded in the bottom half of the frame with one out and runners at the corners as junior Jonathan Keener hit his eighth home run in his last 16 games to stake CSUDH to a 3-1 lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the second, a four-pitch walk to senior Carlos Leyva set up a two-run home run that was blasted off the bat of senior Kevin Pillar, his sixth of the season.

Following a run-scoring wild pitch that extended the Toros lead to 6-1, a two-out bases loaded single by senior Max Anderson extended the CSUDH lead by two runs to account for the final 8-1 score.

Much like the game yesterday, Toros starter Josh Corrales shut down CSUMB after the first, not allowing his next hit until the first batter of the seventh inning while striking out 10 Otters over his 7.0 innings of work. He also registered a double in his lone at-bat in the bottom of the eighth.

In the top of the seventh, the Otters started a rally but were stopped by a lunging, inning-ending catch by shortstop Abel Medina.

For game one, Leyva, Pillar, Medina and Keener each had two hits while Pillar, Keener and Anderson each had multiple RBIs.

Game two starter Sean Wardour walked a tight rope in the first three innings, loading the bases in the first and third while allowing a runner to reach third in the second.  However, Wardour escaped most of the damage, allowing only two runs to start the third inning with only one earned.

The Toros put runners on the corners in the bottom of the third but a one-out double play ended that rally.  They did tie the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-RBI single by senior third baseman Matt Faigh.

CSUMB broke the tie with an RBI single in the top of the sixth before the Toros threatened in the bottom of the sixth.  Senior Kyle Pond lined out to center field just deep enough to score Pillar from third to tie the game at 3-3 through six innings.

In the 7th, however, the Otters used a perfectly timed hit-and-run play to start a rally that led to the game-winning run in CSUMB's 4-3 win.

In between games, 12 Toros were recognized for their excellence in the classroom and in the community as Brandon Quezada, Leyva, Derrick Dingeman, Devon Ramirez, Drew Rodela, Jonathan Boersma, Corrales, Pillar, Pond, Anderson, Nick Plantz, Ray Patchen and Shane Youngdale
all received certificates from the NCAS as part of the 24th Annual National Student-Athlete Day, presented by CSUDH Director of Athletics Patrick Guillen and head coach Murphy Su'a.
