Toros Take 3-1 Series Win Over SF State After 8-4 Victory

Senior Carlos Leyva drove in a team-high three runs

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State Dominguez Hills took its third CCAA series victory with a 8-4 win over San Francisco State on Sunday afternoon.  All but one of the 22 total hits in the game were for a single while four different Toros had multiple hit games.  Senior Carlos Leyva had a team-high three RBIs including two insurance runs in the top of the ninth.

The Toros got on the board in the first inning with senior Kevin Pillar scoring on an error by the Gators third baseman.  CSUDH extended its lead to 3-0 with two runs in the top of the second on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Leyva.

SFSU rallied for a pair of two-runs to cut the lead to 3-2 through two innings.

After a quiet third inning, CSUDH scored two runs on two hits and three helpful errors by the Gators to extend the lead back to three runs at 5-2 through four full frames.

For the second straight frame, SFSU cut the lead down to one thanks to three straight hits to begin the bottom of the sixth. Senior Michael Cruz came in to close the door in a one run game with two on and two outs to end the threat.

A one-out, bases loaded rally to start the eighth added an insurance run as junior Jonathan Keener drove in his second run of the game. The final two runs of the game came off the bat of Leyva in the top of the ninth to bring the game to its 8-4 final.

For the game, junior Matt Akiyama scored a team-high three runs to go along with two hits.  Pillar had a team-high three hits, tying him for the school's career total bases record and setting up for a memorable senior weekend.  Junior Jonathan Boersma got his first career victory in four innings of relief while Cruz recorded his third save of the season.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball squad will close out its 2011 season with a four-game CCAA series against Cal State Monterey Bay, beginning Friday May 6 at 3:00pm.
