Game One Goes to the Toros in 17-1 Blowout Over Pioneers

Senior Carlos Leyva tied the all-time CCAA runs record today

HAYWARD -- Four.  That's how many games the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros now trail UC San Diego for the fourth and final CCAA playoff spot after taking step one today in a 17-1 blowout over host Cal State East Bay.  Senior Carlos Leyva is now
on the brink of adding the all-time CCAA runs records as he tied the league mark after a 2-for-3 day, including a three-run homer.

The Pioneers got on the board first with a solo home run before CSUDH tied the game in the top of the third as a lead-off single by Kevin Logan led to an RBI single by Kevin Pillar two batters later, signaling the beginning of the offensive deluge.

Two runs in the top of the fifth scored thanks to two hits and two huge errors to give CSUDH (16-20, 12-17 CCAA) a 3-1 lead as the Toros blew the game open with a four-run rally, capped by a three-run home run from Leyva one inning later.

A solo blast by senior Barrett Ceverha gave the Toros an 8-1 lead before a six-run surgy in the top of the eighth brought the score to 14-1.  Three doubles and a two-run homer by Jonathan Keener were mixed in with a pair of walks, a hit batter and an error as part of the 6-run frame.

On the afternoon, all but one starter notched a hit and scored a run as the top four batters went 11-for-17, scoring four runs and driving in seven RBIs on three doubles, a home run and three walks.  Sophomore Kevin Logan had a team-high four hits and four runs scored while Jose Jauregui, Kevin Pillar and Ceverha each had three hits.

Toro starter Shane Youngdale was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion, allowing just 4 hits in 7 innings of work, fanning 6 with just 2 walks.

Cal State East Bay (9-25, 7-20 CCAA) commited six errors while their right-handed batters went just 1-for-17 on the afternoon.

The Toros baseball squad will continue its CCAA series against Cal State East Bay with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9, starting at 11:00am.
