No. 8 UC San Diego Takes 2-0 Win to Open CCAA Tournament

Toros face Chico State in 4:30 pm elimination game tomorrow

Box Score
STOCKTON -- Fresh off winning California Collegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year honors, UC San Diego's Camille Gaito showed why she was the league coaches' top choice after tossing a two-hit gem to lead top-seeded and the No. 8 Tritons to a complete game 2-0 win over 4th-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills in the opening game of the CCAA Championship Tournament.

With the loss, the Toros fall to 27-23 and face an elimination game tomorrow at 4:30 pm against Chico State, which fell to Sonoma State 6-2 in the late game.

After a leadoff single by Khryssi Steele to begin the game, Gaito was all business as the next eight batters were retired until Steele's second hit of the game in three innings later.

Two hit batters over the next three innings would be the only base runners to reach for the Toros as they were blanked for the seventh time this season, and the second time in two games.

CSUDH starter Lauren Harper gave up seven hits in the loss, including a leadoff home run to Kris Lesovsky in UCSD's first at-bat that proved to be all the offense Gaito would need.

In the regular season, the Wildcats took a 3-to-1 series win over the Toros in Carson during which CSUC out-scored CSUDH 11-9 in the four games.  The Toros dropped a pair of one-run decisions to bookend the series while the middle two were decided by four-runs each.

In CSUDH's win, Harper tossed a complete game three-hitter in the nightcap of day one, before the Wildcats swept day two to spoil "Senior Day" festivities.
