Toros Benefit From Gator Errors to Rally for 6-4 Victory

Senior Kyle Pond hit the game-winning 3-R HR

SAN FRANCISCO -- Facing the prospect of being eliminated from postseason play this weekend, the need for Ws took on added significance.  Down late, Cal State Dominguez Hills got some help from host San Francisco State miscues
and rallied for a 6-4 CCAA road victory, keeping them four games back of the final playoff spot.  Senior Kyle Pond continued his second half surge by hitting the game-winning three run home run in the top of the eighth for the Toros.

CSUDH (20-22, 15-18 CCAA) threatened to score in the top of the first by loading the bases with two outs before Drew Rodela lined out to left field to end the threat.  Over the first three full innings neither team was able to scrath a run across.

Senior Barrett Ceverha broke the scoreless tie to start the third frame with a first-pitch solo home run over the left center field to take a 1-0 lead.  The Gators responded with their own power, swinging the game to a 2-1 score in their favor on a two-run home run of their own.

Following a scoreless fifth inning, the Toros started the top of the sixth with two singles and a sacrifice bunt, placing two runners in scoring position with only one out.  After a strikeout, a single by junior third baseman Matt Faigh regained the lead for the visitors at 3-2.  CSUDH was able to load the bases but could not add another run.

For the second time, SFSU (13-30, 8-25 CCAA) turned a one-run deficit into a one-run lead, this time on a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 4-3 SFSU.

After a scoreless seventh, the Toros rallied in the eighth inning for three runs thanks to three SFSU errors and a big fly from Pond.  With one out, Kevin Logan reached first on an error before advancing to third on the inning's second error.  When the next batter walked, it set up Pond for his game-winning three run home run over the left field fence.

From there, senior reliever Michael Cruz shut down the Gators offense to pick up his first win of the season, with the final score 6-4 CSUDH.

For the game, Carlos Leyva, Kevin Pillar and Jonathan Keener each had two hits while Faigh and Pond led the way with two and three RBIs respectively.  Senior starter Shane Youngdale went six and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs while striking out three batters.

The Toros and Gators will continue their CCAA series with a doubleheader Saturday April 30, starting at 11:00am in San Francisco.
