Late Rally Is Too Much for Toros to Handle as They Fall 10-6 to CSULA

Saturday's game was extra special for Toro Josh Corrales

CARSON -- Early offense wasn't enough for the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros as early season bullpen woes came back to haunt them.  A five run ninth by the visiting Cal State LA Golden Eagles ended up as a 10-6 Toros defeat.  Senior Kyle Pond blasted his first home run of the season in the game, a first inning three-run home run over the right center field fence.

In the first, both teams continued to ride their offensive wave from last night with their runs being driven in by extra base hits.  In the top of the first, CSULA took an early 1-0 on a double off the right center wall.

The Toros got that run back and more by loading the bases with no outs in their first at-bats.  After a run-scoring double play and a walk, senior Kyle Pond hammered a three-run home run over the right center field fence, staking the Toros to a 4-1 lead after one frame.

With CSULA (24-18) stranding a runner on third to start the second frame, CSUDH (19-22) responded by adding another run to their lead on a two-out RBI single to center by Matt Akiyama.

Things got dangerours for Toros starter Josh Corrales to start the third as he allowed the bases loaded with one out, eventually finding his way out jam with only run run of damage and the score 5-2 after three innings.  A two-out single followed a triple and run-scoring error cut the Toros lead to one at 5-4 through four and a half frames.

After a single run in the top of the eighth made it a one-run game, Cal State LA loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth.  After a pitching change and a strikeout, the Golden Eagles tied the game on a sac fly and ended the five run rally with a three run home run to bring the game to its 10-6 final score.

On the afternoon, Kevin Pillar and Akiyama led the team with two hits each while Jose Serrano pitching two-thirds of an inning of scoreless baseball in the eighth.
Corrales's outing qualified for a quality start with seven innings of work, three earned runs with six strikeouts in 106 pitches.

Prior to the game, the CSUDH honored the one-year anniversary of the passing of Toros starter Josh Corrales father, Robert Corrales, with a moment of silence before the national anthem.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros will return to CCAA play on the road next Friday, April 29 at San Francisco State with the series opener set for 3:00pm.
