Toros Take CSULA Deep into the Night in 14-inning 11-8 Win

Senior Carlos Leyva helped end a four and a half-hour game with an RBI single

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. engaged in a marathon game Friday night, one that saw 24 Toros and 19 Golden Eagles see the field of play in 14 innings.  But in a perfect ending, it was a relief pitcher pinch running for a player with the golden sombrero who scored the winning run.  Senior Carlos Leyva drove in the game-winner, his second RBI of the evening, in the top of the 14th to lead the Toros to an 11-8 victory.

The teams mirrored each other in the first two innings, going scoreless in the first before getting on the board in the second frame.  Senior Abel Medina led off the top of the second with a solo blast to right center, before CSULA tied the score at one on a single while leaving the bases loaded.

CCAA runs scored record holder Leyva added to his total with a one out in the top of the third with a solo home run to right to give the visiting team a 2-1 lead.  The Golden Eagles tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth with an unearned run.

CSUDH (19-21) responded by loading the bases with one out in the top half of the fifth frame, but scored only one run on an RBI groundout off the bat of Kevin Pillar.  The visitors later made it a two-run lead
through five and a half on an error by CSULA second baseman Moon.

CSU Los Angeles (23-18) responded with a two-out run on a bases loaded walk to bring the score to 4-3 after six innings.  Toros starter Shane Youngdale could not get through the sixth, but was solid in his five and two-thirds innings of work, allowing only two earned runs.

With two out in the top of the seventh, Medina hit the first of four straight singles to add two runs and make CSULA's deficit 6-3.  For the second inning in a row, CSULA responded with two runs of its own, thanks to four singles on their part.

In the bottom of the eighth, four singles and a wild pitch turned the game from a one run Toro lead to a two run Golden Eagle lead.  The Toros tied the game at eight in the top of the ninth on a single, a two-base error and two wild pitches, leading to extras.

From the tenth to the twelfth, each team left at least one baserunner in each half inning.

Senior Barrett Ceverha, who fanned four times in the game, led to the winning run in the 14th after getting hit by a pitch before reliever Derrick Dingeman entered as a pinch runner.  After a walk, Leyva drove in Dingeman from second before a double and single added two more insurance runs to bring the game to its final score of 11-8.

Each team ended up with 19 hits en route to stranding a total of 31 runners, with Medina, Pillar and Kyle Pond leading the Toros with three hits each in a four and a half-hour marathon game.   Senior David Fair recorded the victory with two and two-thirds no-hit innings of relief.

Cal State Dominguez Hills will finish this two game series against Cal State LA with a single game at Toro Field Saturday, April 23 starting at 1:00pm.
