Softball Splits Pair at CS Monterey Bay to Conclude Regular Season Series

SEASIDE -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team was thisclose to returning the favor of yesterday's sweep at host CS Monterey Bay after taking a 7-0 opener and leading 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the Otters turned 3 hits and a walk into three runs to take a 4-3 come-from-behind win, and take the regular season series with 3 wins in 4 games.

With the split, CSUDH moves to 12-8, 8-8 CCAA.

The opener was clad in all Cardinal and Gold as the Toros nearly matched CSUMB's mercy run rule game yesterday in game one as CSUDH scored twice in the 3rd, thrice in the 4th and twice more in the 7th to put the game to rest early.

Two two-out walks and a Krista Gould accounted for the 3rd-inning runs, while a walk and an error set the stage for a Daisy Beltran two-run double and an Emiley McEwen RBI single one inning later, with Khryssi Steele taking her turn at a 2RBI double in the 7th and final inning.

That proved plenty for starter Lauren Harper, who rebounded from yesterday's 8-0 loss to scatter just three hits in the win, fanning four Otters in the process.

Game two looked in favor of the Toros early as well as CSUDH erased a 1-0 deficit with two in the 3rd, the big blow coming on a Gould 2RBI double down the left field line.

That's where the score remained until the 6th when the hosts strung together 3 hits and an intentional walk to plate three runs en route to a 4-2 lead.

CSUDH had one final rally in it in its final at-bat after the first two batters reached base on a single and hit batter.  After a sacrifice moved the runners over and McEwen was intentionally walked, a groundout brought home the Toros' third run of the game and moved runners to second and third, but Otter Kylie Linnane induced Brittany Brenner to ground out to second for the final out.

Toro starter Stephanie Jimenez was the hard-luck loser after tossing a magnificent five innings, before the CSUMB bats awoke in the sixth.

Gould provided the big stick with 5 RBI in the split.

The Toros return home for a non-conference twinbill against University of Marysville on Monday, March 7, before resuming league play with a four-game set against UC San Diego this weekend.
