Warriors Prevail in 1-0, 13-Inning Marathon Win

Shane Youngdale tossed 10 shutout innings

TURLOCK -- Whatever the case may be, the road has caused the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team to play extra innings every they have been away from Toro Field. Today, like the other two instances, they were defeated by Cal State Stanislaus 1-0 in 13 innings, highlighted by 10 shutout innings from senior starting pitcher Shane Youngdale.

Twice in the first three innings, the Toros advanced a runner to third, with Kevin Pillar being thrown out at home in the first and Ricky Vasquez stranded on third with two outs in the top of the third.  In the bottom of the third CSUDH returned the favor with Jose Jauregui gunning out a Warrior runner at home to end the inning.

The bottom of the sixth put up an even bigger threat for CSUDH as it loaded the bases on three straight singles with one out.  CSUDH, however, which fell to 5-11, 1-8 CCAA, failed to capitalize, keeping the game scoreless through six innings. The game continued to be scoreless heading into extra innings, the third instance of extra innings in the last five games for the Toros.

In the top of the 10th and 13th innings, CSUDH placed a runner in scoring position, but both times the squad was unable to push across the go-ahead score.  After a shutdown 11th and 12th innings of work by reliever Derrick Dingeman, CSUS (11-2, 4-1 CCAA) placed runners at the corners with no outs in the bottom of the 13th, where a sacrifice fly would bring home the game-winning in the 1-0 pitcher's duel.

For the game, Youngdale was nails, going 10 innings of shutout baseball, scattering eight hits and striking out five.  Pillar led the Toros with three hits while Abel Medina and Vasquez added two hits.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros will return to action tomorrow afternoon to play a doubleheader against these same Warriors, with the first pitch set for 11:00am.
