Toros Take Series From No. 18 Cal State L.A. With a Saturday Split

Senior Abel Medina drove in three runs with a double in game one

LOS ANGELES -- Attempting to chase down the final CCAA playoff spot, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros needed to make a big move this weekend against Cal State L.A.  Saturday saw the Toros split their games, but take the series three games to one, winning the afternoon affair 11-4 before dropping the nightcap 8-4.  Senior Kyle Pond was the catalyst in game one, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a double.

Coming into action today, CSUDH (13-18, 9-15 CCAA) was outscoring its opponents by 20 runs in the first two innings of the game.  They continued that pattern in game one by scoring one run in the first and three in the second inning while starter Sean Wardour held CSULA scoreless.

In the first, a one-out triple by Jose Jauregui led to the first run of the game scoring on a wild pitch.  The second inning saw five straight Toros reach base with one out in the inning, highlighted by the second of back-to-back doubles scoring two off the bat of Pond.

The Golden Eagles (17-11, 12-8 CCAA) scored one in the bottom of the third while leaving two other runners stranded, making the score 4-1 after three complete.  A scoreless fourth lead to a game-breaking, four run top of the fifth by the Toros.

With the first four CSUDH batters reaching base safely in the fifth, the four-run rally was helped by an error to go along with three hits to make the score 8-1 after five innings.

From there both sides scored three runs, including a solo home run by Abel Medina, giving the game one an 11-4 final score for Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Wardour went seven full allowing only five hits and one earned run while striking out six.  Pond led the team with three RBIs and three hits with Jauregui, Medina and Jonathan Keener each having at least two hits, a run and an RBI.

Game two started much like the first as in the top of the first inning Carlos Leyva scored the first run of the game to take an early 1-0 lead.  The score remained the same until the Golden Eagles scored four runs, three of them unearned, on four hits and two errors to take a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

CSULA added another run in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the sixth, with three of the runs coming thanks to home runs.

The Toros mounted a final rally by scoring three runs on two doubles and a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh.  However, the final score for game two came to be 8-4 in favor of the home squad.

The Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills will host the CCAA leading Chico State Wildcats next week for a four-game series starting on Friday, April 1, at 3:00pm on Toro Field.
