Pillar Proves Double Trouble for Cal State L.A. as CSUDH Sweeps Cross-Town Rival

Senior All-American Kevin Pillar set the CSUDH single game record for doubles

CARSON -- Senior All-American Kevin Pillar (pictured) doubled his worth today in Cal State Dominguez Hills' 11-1 opening game win over visiting Cal State L.A. as the center fielder went 5-for-5 that included four doubles to set the Toros single game doubles record.   Game two also went CSUDH's way in a 5-2 win to sweep the twinbill.

Fellow senior Shane Youngdale was the beneficiary of 17 Toro hits as the ace improved to 3-2 after tossing 6 innings of 3-hit ball.

The Toros spotted CSULA a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI double to right center.  That would also be the end of their scoring as CSUDH went on to score 11 unanswered runs, beginning with a five-run, momentum changing bottom of the first.

With one out and a runner on second, the Toros drilled four-straight hits to drive in three runs.  The Golden Eagles notched the second out only to have third baseman Ricky Vasquez double in two runs and finish the scoring with five across for the hosts.

CSULA staged a huge threat in the top of the third by loading the bases with one out, only to have Youngdale escape the jam unscathed with the bases juiced.  The score remained 5-1 until the bottom of the fifth with CSUDH adding a run on a Vasquez single before blowing the game open in the bottom of the sixth.

The first three baserunners reached base safely to start a four-run inning on only three hits with three of the runs being unearned.  Pillar set a new CSUDH single-game doubles record with an RBI double, his fourth of the game, in the bottom of the eighth.

In total, the Toros had 17 hits and no errors compared to only four hits and three errors for the Golden Eagles.  Drew Rodela and Vasquez had three hits each in game one.

Much like in game one, the Toros blitzed the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the first inning of game two thanks to the four, five and six hitters.  Designated hitter Jonathan Keener highlighted the three run inning with a two-run double blasted to left field.  CSUDH added another in the bottom of the second on an RBI groundout to take a 4-0 lead after two innings.

Game two starter Josh Corrales showed why he is one of the top pitchers in the league as he masterfully pitched seven scoreless innings to start the game.  It was not easy as Corrales scattered seven hits and forced CSULA to strand eight runners.

Neither offense could get anything going as both starters settled in to hold each team scoreless from the third inning on until a Pillar solo blast to left field in the bottom of the seventh made it a 5-0 Toros lead.

CSULA rallied with Corrales out of the game in the top of the eighth, scoring two runs thanks to three straight hits to start the inning.  With no outs, Andrew Klausmeier sapped all the energy from the Golden Eagle bench by picking off the runner at first on a slick third-to-first move.

Rodela and Pillar tied with an afternoon high five hits with Rodela's all being singles and Pillar's all being of the extra base variety.  Danny Torres and Derrick Dingeman each gathered their first saves of the season in the twinbill.

The Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills will finish their four-game CCAA series at Cal State L.A. with the first pitch set for 11:00am Saturday March 26.
