Toros Split Day and the Series Against the Coyotes

Sophomore starter Sean Wardour picked up his second win of the season

CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros played opposite games in their CCAA doubleheader with the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes this afternoon, winning game one 9-2 before falling 2-0 in the nightcap.  Both pitching performances by the Toros starters were solid with sophomore Sean Wardour picking up the victory in game one, going eight innings while allowing only three hits.

The keys to victory in game one for the Toros were the 11 hits with two outs, leading to eight of the team's nine runs.  Things got started in the bottom of the first inning with a solo blast to center from the bat of Kevin Pillar. It became a 2-0 lead for the home team with an RBI single by Jose Jauregui in the bottom half of the second.

With starter Wardour continuing to shut down the Coyote bats, the Toros broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth with four runs on five hits.  After a run scored with one out, CSUDH manufactured three more runs with two outs, highlighted by a two-run single from Pillar to take a 6-0 lead after four complete.

The Toros made it 9-0 with three more two-out runs in the bottom of the sixth frame, with Carlos Leyva, Abel Medina and Jonathan Keener each driving in a run.  CSUSB broke up Wardour's shutout with two runs in the top of the eighth on one hit.  For the game Wardour went eight full innings allowing only three hits.

With a scoreless first inning to start the nightcap, the Coyotes started a huge threat by loading the bases with two out.  However, senior starter David Fair threw a perfect curveball for a called third strike while the count was full to end the top of the second with no runs scored.

CSUDH placed two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the third with one out thanks to two singles and a sacrifice bunt.  The Coyotes shut down the rally on two pitches with a groundout to first and a foul pop out, continuing the scoreless game through three innings. Fair returned the favor by stranding two base runners in the top half of the fourth.

In the top of the fifth CSUSB ended the scoreless tie on a two-run, pinch-hit home run to right center field to take a 2-0 lead.  It would prove to be Fair's only mistake of the afternoon.

CSU Dominguez Hills stranded two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth before stranding another in the seventh to end the game.

The Toros will play their next CCAA series against rival Cal State L.A., beginning with a game Thursday, March 24, with the first pitch set for 3:00pm on Toro Field.
