No. 20 Toros Down Western Oregon in First of Four-Game Series, 8-1

Box Score
CARSON -- Playing against one of the top teams in the west region, the 20th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros flexed their offensive muscles against Western Oregon University in taking an 8-1 victory. Five different Toros had at least two hits led by senior Abel Medina who had three hits and a team-high 3 RBIs.

Western Oregon scored first in the top of the first thanks to three hits, including a double, while stranding two runners in scoring position. In the bottom half of the frame, the Toro bats would get that run back plus one thanks to three hits of their own.

With one out, senior Kevin Pillar singled to center, was moved over and then scored on a Drew Rodela single. The other run would come thanks to a hit batter and another single, this time by senior Kyle Pond.

The bottom of the second went just as well for CSUDH as another two-out rally got started and cashed in by the three All-Americas. Two runs were scored after Carlos Leyva singled with Pillar doubling him in, followed by an Medina RBI double to push the score to 4-0 after two.

Cal State Dominguez Hills would add another in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings, while starting pitcher Shane Youngdale would masterfully wiggle out of jams, scattering nine hits through six innings while allowing only one run.

In the top of the seventh the Wolves would load the bases but their final rally was shutdown by Jonathan Boersma.

For the game, both squads combined to leave 29 runners on base, 15 by WOU. Pillar had a team-high three runs scored while the team stole three bases on the day.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros will play against Western Oregon again tomorrow, February 10, 2011, at Toro Field with the first pitch at 2:00pm.
