Toros Overcome Six Miscues to Record 6-2 Victory Over St. Martin's

Box Score
CARSON -- After a difficult start defensively that saw six errors committed in the first six innings, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros manufactured enough runs to defeat the Saint Martin University Saints 6-2. A 3-run eighth, all with two helped give CSUDH breathing room in a game that was a one run game throughout. Sophomore Sean Wardour
went six full, allowing two unearned runs on only two hits while striking out seven in his first collegiate start.

Saint Martin's led off the top of the first with an unearned run only to have the Toro seniors respond in their half of the inning.  With one out Kevin Pillar blasted a stand-up triple over the drawn in right fielder's head. Abel Medina followed the triple with an RBI groundout over the pitcher's glove to knot the game at one.

Errors by starting pitcher Sean Wardour, his second of the game, and Medina would cost the Toros another unearned run in the top of the fourth, but CSUDH's starter would work his way out of the jam by recording a strikeout with two on and two outs. CSU Dominguez Hills grabbed the lead in the bottom half thanks to a double to right center by Drew Rodela after the leadoff batter was hit by the pitch. CSUDH would use an RBI groundout and sacrifice fly to take the lead at 3-2 after four innings.

Things became precarious for CSUDH in the top half of the sixth as two errors loaded the bases with only one out. SMU's rally would be shut down due to a failed squeeze play followed by a strikeout from Wardour.

Cal State Dominguez Hills would add three huge insurance runs all with two outs in the bottom of the eighth on RBI singles by Ricky Vasquez and Brian Gregory to round out the scoring.

Nick Plantz, David Fair and Andrew Klausmeier would combine out of the bullpen to shutout the Saints over the final three innings. Rodela led the team with two hits and two runs on the afternoon.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros will return to action on the Toro Field this Wednesday against Western Oregon University at 2:00pm.
