CARSON -- In a season in which the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros are hoping to repeat their success, they repeated the start of the 2010 season by dropping the season opener.  Unlike last season it was a close loss to CCAA rival Cal Poly Pomona by a 5-3 final, one that will leave a sour taste in many Toro mouths. Senior Carlos Leyva (pictured) did his best to kick start the offense, gathering three hits, scoring a run and driving in another.

The game started out well for the Toros as the first two runners reached base before being sacrificed over by Kevin Pillar. After a strikeout and an intentional walk, newcomer Jonathan Keener grabbed his first hit and RBI at the D-II level putting CSUDH up 1-0 after one.

After Abel Medina added another run on a two-out RBI with a double to right center, the Toros led 2-0 after the first three innings.  Senior Shane Youngdale allowed the first run of the season, an unearned run at that, with two out after the Broncos took advantage of two Toro errors.

Youngdale was smooth through the first three innings before things started unravel with CPP doing all its damage with two outs.  In the top of the fourth, Bronco freshman Humberto Tovalin turned a one-run deficit to a one-run lead with a blast over the right field fence. The sixth saw Youngdale labor, allowing three hits and two runs, one on an error after he was replaced.

Down 5-3 and having stranded 11 baserunners through seven innings, head coach Murphy Su'a called on his bench players to lead the comeback.  Freshman Danny Haley led the inning with a spirited at-bat that resulted in a double. After a passed ball and a strikeout, Leyva brought the lead down to two with a single. However, with only one out, pinch hitter Drew Rodela would end the rally after hitting into a double play.

On the afternoon CSU Dominguez Hills had nine hits compared to eight by Cal Poly Pomona, though CSUDH committed four errors compared to three by CPP.

Leyva and Medina each had three hits and an RBI with Medina also drawing a walk. Junior transfer Derrick Dingeman threw three solid innings in relief, allowing only two hits, with no runs and two strikeouts.

Before the contest, Major League Baseball great Maury Wills threw out the honorary first pitch to a roaring ovation, before posing for a photo opportunity with the 2011 Toros.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros return to action at Toro Field Saturday, February 5, at 10:00am against St. Martin's University.
